The Danish midfielder is expected to be released from hospital soon

Christian Eriksen is « doing well » and is expected to be released from hospital in the coming days.

The Denmark midfielder collapsed on the pitch during yesterday’s friendly with Ukraine in Odense in disturbing scenes that echoed a similar incident at Euro 2020after which the former Manchester United and Tottenham star was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) – a type of pacemaker.

The match against Ukraine was abandoned, although Eriksen was able to leave the field after regaining consciousness with the help of players from both teams.

Denmark national team doctor Morten Boysen gave an update on the 34-year-old’s condition this morning.

Boysen said: « I spoke to Christian this morning and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits. He is expected to be discharged soon and able to go home.

« We look after the players and staff well and are in constant contact with them. »

Eriksen’s former teammate advises him to quit

Eriksen now plays for German club Wolfsburg, but his future looks uncertain.

His former Spurs team-mate Andros Townsend advised him to retire. Speaking on talkSPORT BreakfastTownsend said: “Of course, from the outside, yes, I would advise it

“There are so many more important things to worry about, he has a wonderful family to worry about.

« But who knows what goes on in everyone’s head? Let alone a footballer who has worked so hard to get where he needed to be, who almost died on the pitch and came back to play for Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

« So it’s hard to know what’s going on in his head, but of course there are more important things to think about than a football game at the moment. »
