World Cup 2026 friendly report, score, goals as Harry Kane puts in ‘brilliant training’ in international friendly

Harry Kane’s 67th goal in club and international matches since the start of last season saw England beat New Zealand in an international friendly at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Captain Kane made it 79 goals for England and moved 26 clear of Wayne Rooney as his side’s all-time top scorer with a deft header from Jed Spence’s left-footed pass in stoppage time in an uneventful first half.

Dan Byrne headed the post shortly after half-time after being introduced as one of England’s 11 substitutes at the break.

Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha also made his debut at the age of 17, becoming the youngest debutant for the Three Lions since Jude Bellingham, who was 155 days his junior in November 2020.

England v New Zealand analysis: Tuchel ‘sees bigger picture’

Concerns about the quality of the pitch awaiting England proved unfounded at the NFL Stadium, where New Zealand put up more resistance than their status as the 75th-ranked team in the world would suggest.

Millwall goalkeeper Max Crocombe turned away Kane’s early strike from distance early on, while Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood had a quiet game.

Former England left-back Stephen Warnock suggested head coach Thomas Tuchel « doesn’t care about the result » against the rivals, who lost 4-0 to Haiti in a friendly on Wednesday.

« It’s not the performance many would have wanted, » Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live. « What he wants to see is this England team improving and understanding what they want from him.

« He won’t care about pace like everyone else – he’ll just think ‘as long as I get my team ready and we win the first game and get out of the group.’

« That’s all he’s worried about. He sees the bigger picture. »

Harry Kane: England goal against New Zealand ‘looked easy’

Former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane praised Kane. « He’s in the form of his life, in great form and he makes it look really, really easy, » Keane told ITV Football about the goal.

« He’s got a lot of speed on the ball and he’s a top striker, he’s in the right position, he’s just got to get it into the corner. How many times have we said that about Kane? He’s the man.

« It’s been a brilliant training session for England – they’ve had a couple of Tests, they’ve had to run a bit and there’s a bit of sharpness to come. It’s been a really good training session for them. »
