The second half of Mbappe’s season was blighted by injuries, with him being sidelined in May’s Clasico against Barcelona in one of two games he missed after picking up a hamstring problem.
Some Madrid fans took exception when Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time top scorer went on holiday in May rather than continue his injury rehabilitation in the Spanish capital, with a petition calling for Mbappe to be sold.
He missed seven games in all competitions with a knee problem, but completed 90 minutes for France for the first time since November in their 3-1 friendly win over Northern Ireland in their last friendly before the World Cup on 8 June.
A stunning long-range strike for his second goal completed France’s opening 3-1 win over Senegal, and Mbappe then scored another brace in the 3-0 win over Iraq on Matchday 2.
The 27-year-old scored twice as France finished the group stage in style by beating Norway 4-1 to win their group and scored two more in the 1/32 win over Sweden.
Mbappe’s next game at the World Cup will be France’s quarter-final match against Morocco on July 9 at 9pm BST.

France are among the favorites to win the World Cup and have a talented squad featuring many of the best players from across Europe, led by their prolific captain and focal point.
Paris Saint-Germain’s all-time top scorer Mbappe was the top scorer in UEFA World Cup qualifying Group D, which also included Ukraine, Iceland – the only team to prevent France from winning as the hosts held them to a draw – and Azerbaijan.
Another striker Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 Ballon d’Or after playing an inspirational role in PSG’s Champions League triumph alongside club and international team-mates Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaire-Emery, Bradley Barkola and Desiree Douet.
1998 World Cup and EURO 2000 winner with France as midfielder, manager Deschamps will step down from his role after 14 years at the finals, having led his country to glory at the 2018 World Cup, the 2021 Nations League title and the EURO 2016 final.
Spain, England, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal and Germany are among the most likely contenders that France will need to beat for the title if they are to send Deschamps their dream.
Mbappe leads a team that includes five PSG players and seven from the Premier League.
